You are curious and ambitious. You are looking for the intellectual challenge you deserve.

But with so many programs out there, how do you know which ones are respected by colleges and worth your time?

At the Pioneer Co-Curricular Summit on Sept 19, you’ll meet admissions officers and leaders from top academic programs in one trusted, free forum.

College planning involves more than preparing an application. Learning about changes in higher education and finding strong academic opportunities outside regular coursework can help students make thoughtful choices about how they spend their high school years.

One term families may encounter along the way is co-curricular learning.

What Does “Co-Curricular” Mean?

Co-curricular experiences complement classroom learning and extend a student’s education beyond regular coursework.

They can include academic research, competitions, leadership development, summer academic programs, community engagement, and other structured experiences that connect with a student’s interests and growth.

The term overlaps with extracurricular, but co-curricular experiences generally place more emphasis on the connection to a student’s education—how an activity develops an academic interest, builds specific skills, or adds depth to what a student is learning.

For students looking for challenging experiences outside school, understanding the range of co-curricular options available can also make it easier to choose opportunities that fit their interests and goals.

Learn More at the 2026 Pioneer Annual Co-Curricular Summit

The Pioneer Academics 5th Annual Co-Curricular Summit will take place virtually on Saturday, September 19, 2026, beginning at 9:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time. Registration is free.

This year’s theme is:

Cultivating Wisdom: Growing Integrity, Empathy and Maturity in Education

The conversations begin with a central idea from this year’s theme: wisdom transcends knowledge and technical skills.

The Summit will look at how education can help students develop resilience, integrity, empathy, sound judgment, and the ability to respond to uncertainty with greater clarity. It will also examine the link between learning and leadership—and how students can develop the experience and perspective needed to lead with purpose, compassion, and confidence.

The event will feature a Keynote Speaker, Plenary Speaker, live Panel Sessions and Q&A, College Fair, and Program Fair, bringing together voices from higher education, academic programs, and other areas of education and society.

2026 Keynote Speaker: Dr. Francis S. Collins

This year’s Keynote Speaker, Dr. Francis S. Collins, is a physician and geneticist known for his landmark discoveries of disease genes, for leading the Human Genome Project, and for his 12 years as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

His career has spanned scientific research, public service, and questions of ethics and leadership—areas that connect closely with this year’s Summit theme.

2026 Plenary Speaker: Daniel Golden

The 2026 Plenary Speaker, Daniel Golden, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and editor, critically acclaimed bestselling author, and three-time George Polk Award recipient.

Golden has worked for ProPublica, Bloomberg News, and The Wall Street Journal. His reporting has covered higher education and admissions practices, as well as immigration, cybercrime, and other major social issues.

His perspective offers students and families a different way to examine higher education—not simply through admissions requirements, but through the institutions, policies, and broader forces that shape it.

College Fair: Meet University Representatives

The 2026 College Fair gives students the opportunity to connect directly with representatives from participating colleges and universities.

The current lineup includes:

•  Carnegie Mellon University

•  Hamilton College

•  Northwestern University

•  Oberlin College

•  University of Chicago

•  University of Pennsylvania

•  Vanderbilt University

•  Australian National University

•  University of Toronto

•  And more...

For students comparing universities or beginning to think about future applications, the College Fair offers a chance to learn about institutions directly from the people representing them.

Program Fair: Explore Academic and Educational Resources

The Program Fair brings together respected programs and organizations serving students with different academic interests and goals.

Confirmed participants currently include:

•  Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY)

•  Columbia University Pre-College Programs

•  QuestBridge

•  UPenn Wharton Pre-Baccalaureate Program

•  Northwestern Center for Talent Development (CTD)

•  Davidson Institute

•  Girls Who Code

•  TeenSHARP

•  And more

Together, these organizations represent a range of areas including advanced academic study, pre-college learning, gifted education, STEM, college access, and student development.

Rather than researching each opportunity separately, students can use the Program Fair to compare different types of resources and identify options that may fit their interests.

Who Should Attend?

The Summit is particularly relevant for:

•  High school students preparing for college

•  Students looking for challenging academic experiences outside school

•  Families researching research, pre-college, or enrichment opportunities

•  Parents who want to better understand trends in higher education and admissions

•  School counselors and educators supporting college-bound students

Students, parents, and educators are all welcome to attend.

If you cannot join every session live, most Summit recordings will remain available for 30 days after the event. The College Fair and Program Fair are the main exceptions, since those sessions are designed for direct interaction with participating representatives.
