CollegeBoard is launching AP Precalculus

In mid May, College Board announced that it will launch AP Precalculus in 2023 fall and have the AP course/ Exam ready in 2024.

According to College Board, AP Precalculus will prepare a much broader group of students to thrive in college math courses, regardless of where they start in high school math.

Based on its research, for thousands of new college students, introductory math is a barrier to success. Without strong preparation in high school, students struggle to complete remedial or introductory college math classes that are often taught in large lectures with minimal student support. More than half of students enrolling at public two-year colleges and nearly a third of students at public four-year colleges are assigned to remedial math, and more than 40 percent of those students fail to complete their remedial coursework. High school precalculus can improve math readiness. Offering a college-level precalculus course in high school will give students a new and valuable option for improving math readiness and staying on track for college.

According to College Board, AP Precalculus will help students in the following ways: 

• Prepare more students for the rigors of college-level math.
• Address one of the biggest barriers to college completion, especially among underrepresented students.
• Create a new college credit opportunity for the many students who do not begin high school on an accelerated math track.
• Create a much broader pipeline for STEM majors by setting a strong foundation for further math coursework, including calculus, in college.
• Motivate, encourage, and reward high school students to develop the math proficiency needed for a variety of majors and careers.

AP Precalculus will cover for major topics:

• Polynomial and Rational Functions
• Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
• Trigonometric and Polar Functions
• Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors, and Matrices

This might a alternative for SAT subject Math which was no longer offered by College Board. In the meantime, it also provides another AP in math related fields to students who prefer not to or not able to take Honors PreCalculus, AP Calc or AP Statistics.
