What's Model United Nations
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation that enables students to learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. During a MUN conference, participants assume the role of a representative of a country, organization, or individual, and work collaboratively with other delegates from around the globe to solve a particular problem. This activity offers a unique learning opportunity, teaching students valuable skills such as research, public speaking, debating, writing, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership. While MUN is often an extracurricular activity, some schools offer it as a class, aiming to engage students and foster their deeper understanding of current world issues.
Before attending conferences, delegates conduct thorough research and prepare position papers and policy proposals that they will debate with other delegates in their committee. At the end of a conference, participants vote on written policies, referred to as draft resolutions, with the objective of passing them by majority vote. The outstanding delegates in each committee, as well as delegations, are sometimes recognized with awards.
Model UN organizations host conferences that cater to students ranging from elementary school to college and university levels, with most conferences typically focusing on one of these three levels. Delegates usually attend conferences as part of a delegation sent by their respective school or university's model UN clubs. However, some delegates attend conferences independently.
