Through the experiences of three Pioneer alumni from Taiwan — now studying at Stanford University, Imperial College London, and UC San Diego — we take a closer look at how high school research shapes students’ skills, confidence, and readiness for university learning.

Stella’s research focused on “period justice,” exploring how laws related to menstrual leave, access to menstrual products, and education could contribute to a more just society.
She also highlighted the importance of Pioneer’s discussion environment — a space where everyone had the opportunity to share their perspectives. This experience helped her build confidence in expressing ideas, especially when discussing complex topics such as gender and law.

Inez — Imperial College London Research Field: Chemistry

​Inez emphasized that Pioneer is not an easy program — but that’s exactly why it’s valuable.

Through her experience, she developed essential academic skills such as research methodology, managing multiple deadlines, and building meaningful academic relationships with professors. These skills continue to benefit her in university today.

Ruby — University of California, San Diego Research Topic: Native American Literature

Ruby’s experience highlights the impact of structured academic writing support.
With guidance from Pioneer’s Writing Center, she developed the ability to write a 20-page research paper — a skill that significantly improved her confidence in university-level writing. She continues to revisit feedback from her research experience, applying it to her current academic work.
